Filament or incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs were widely used earlier for lighting purpose at homes and shops. Basically, these are high energy consumption bulbs and one can have an idea from this fact that incandescent bulbs which operate at about 20% efficiency result in 80% electrical energy losses as heat. The consumption of electricity is a formidable problem in our daily life in the general or corporate areas.
Nowadays, many people are turning to low energy light bulbs for home lighting to minimize electricity bills. When it comes to energy efficient lighting, we often find the solution in the form of CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Light). However Light Emitting Diodes or LED can save much more energy than a CFL and also LED lights are ten times longer lasting than CFL.
We can understand this from the fact that LED circuit will approach 80% efficiency, which means 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light energy, the remaining 20% is lost as heat energy. So, it can be said that LED Light is more efficient to the CFL in both the aspects of energy consumption and its working life.
As far as the technical aspects of LED Lights are concerned, two points need to be considered i.e. of Wattage and Lumens.
Wattage refers to the amount of electricity that the light bulb uses. The higher the number of watts more would be the electricity consumption. A 100 watt bulb will light your room more brightly than a 40 watt bulb in case of filament bulbs and halogen bulbs. But, in case of LED lights they are typically rated from 1 watt to 5 watts, which means that the electricity consumption is checked besides providing abundance of light in the room. This is in stark contrast from the power consumption of incandescent bulbs.
Lumens imply the amount of light produced by a bulb. The greater the lumens, the greater will be its brightness. LED Lights generate a high level of brightness or lumens, for very little power, or wattage.
But the one thing to be kept in mind is that Led Lights are focused lights which mean a cone of light is focused on a specific area. There are many types of LEDs available in the market so before purchasing the LED Light, it is important to understand its usage and where it would be installed.
